趣味英语——rain cats and dogs

In the middle of going home it started to rain cats and dogs.

It's raining.

It's raining hard或者it's raining heavily.

It is a heavy downpour或者It is pouring或者It is raining extremely heavily.

It's raining cats and dogs.

for example:

Why not wear a raincoat and go out? It is raining cats and dogs outside.

“To rain cats and dogs”最早出现在理查德-布罗姆1652年创作的剧本《都市智慧》中:“It shall rain dogs and polecats.”

I know Sir John will go, though he was sure it would cats and dogs.

In Norse mythology, the cat is supposed to have great influence on the weather. Witches that rode on storms were said to assume the form of cats." Dogs and wolves were attendants to Odin, the god of storms, and the dog "is a signal of wind."

Cats were supposed to have an influence over the weather, while dogs were the signal of storms.

it is believable to have come from the old German myths of Wotan.

比如说lucky dog是幸运儿,love me love my dog爱屋及乌,old dog是老头,old cat是老女人,cat fight形容女人打架很激烈。
