Bite the dust 翻译成“吃土”？可千万别这么理解，在地道美语中，它有两层含义：
第一个含义：企业破产、机器失灵等。
可以从表面引申出来，当你已经需要bite the dust的时候，说明你的经济情况也不太好；如果机器需要bite the dust，那机器肯定也老化、出故障了。
第二个含义：失败、完蛋、死亡。（类似于网络用语“败者食尘”）
这个含义来源于上世纪的西部电影，当牛仔被击中从马上掉下来，地面扬起的尘土塞了满嘴，这也表明他输了，失败了。还有一种说法可以追溯到《荷马史诗》，书中使用了bite the dust形容战士死亡的惨状。
例1：This machine bites the dust and it has been completely scrapped.
